Franklin D. Scott Prize – $250 for Best Article on Swedish-American History

The award is open to all new contributors to The Swedish-American Historical Quarterly. The winning article will be published in the Quarterly, which reserves the right to publish any other article submitted at the discretion of the editor. Unused articles will be returned to the writers on request.

Form: All articles should be typed and double-spaced. Any footnotes should be numbered serially and placed at the end of the article. The Quarterly follows the style guidelines in the Chicago Manual of Style and The Elements of Style (Strunk and White). Exceptions are listed in The Quarterly, Vol. LII, no. 2 (April 2001), pp. 120-123.

Length: 15 to 20 pages, inclusive of notes.

Deadline: October 1st

Judges: The articles will be judged by members of the Publication Committee of The Swedish-American Historical Society, and their decision will be final.

The prize is named for Franklin D. Scott, former president of The Swedish-American (then Swedish Pioneer) Historical Society, former editor of the Quarterly, and longtime member of the Publications Committee.

Emerging Scholar Prize – $250 for Best Article by Students on Swedish-American History

The Emerging Scholar Prize is designed to encourage new scholars in the field of Swedish-American history, as well as to expand student memberships in the Society.

The award is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. The winning article may be published in the Quarterly, which reserves the right to publish any other article submitted at the discretion of the editor. The winning entry will receive $250. Every student who submits an entry will also be awarded a free, one-year student membership in the Swedish-American Historical Society.

Nils William and Dagmar Olsson Research Fund

Modest sums to help defray expenses for original research in Swedish-American immigration history are available through the Nils William and Dagmar Olsson Research Fund. Proposals should include a curriculum vitae, a description of the project (2-4 pages), and an itemized estimate of expenses.
