SAHS Spring Tour of SWEDISH-AMERICAN SITES IN THE DETROIT AREAAPRIL 23-25, 2010Join us for a delightful spring tour of Swedish-American sites in the Detroit area, featuring a dinner evening hosted by the Swedish Club of Metropolitan Detroit and visits to noted sites of Swedish-American interest. These attractions include Cranbrook School where Swedish sculptor Carl Milles created several sculptures and Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen designed several extraordinary buildings, including his own exquisite home, which we’ll tour. On Saturday, we’ll also visit the renowned and expansive Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Although Detroit was not a major destination for the early Swedish immigrants, many Swedish-Americans moved there from other U.S. towns, lured by the promise of well-paying jobs in the “motor city.” These Swedish-Americans found one another and established churches and social organizations and contributed their talents in the workplace as engineers, high-level executives, mechanics, office workers, and assembly-line workers. They made their mark in their professions along with cultural and service organizations such as the Detroit Swedish Foundation*, the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce, SWEA, the Jenny Lind Club, and the Swedish Club.
Our weekend plans include staying at the comfortable Country Inn and Suites in Novi, Michigan, a Detroit suburb. Activities begin with a smörgåsbord at Ikea on Friday evening and a program on Swedish-Americans’ contributions in the Detroit area. On Saturday morning we’ll enjoy a guided tour at Cranbrook School, followed by several hours on our own at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Our weekend will conclude on Saturday evening with a festive dinner and special program at the Swedish Club, located in Bloomfield Hills and hosted by its hospitable members. Detroit-Area Swedish-Americans bid us a hearty Välkommen! *We are grateful to the Detroit Swedish Foundation for contributing a grant toward the expenses of this weekend.
