Swedish American Historical Society

The first Swedish meeting
The Society sponsors two meetings annually for its members, featuring discussions, workshops, cultural activities, noted speakers and field trips to Swedish-American sites.  Non-members are also welcome if space is available.

Members are free to attend the semi-annual board meetings.

The first meeting in Delaware, 1638

Conferences are held regularly, covering various topics relating to the Swedish-American experience.  Events in recent years have included a three-day tour of 17th Century Swedish Colony sites along the Delaware; a weekend exploring Lindsborg, Kansas, a town settled in 1869 by Swedish immigrants from Värmland; a tour of Swedish-American communities in northern Illinois; and a three-day study conference in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Two other recent trips included a visit to Rockford, Illinois, to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Swedish settlement there; and in  September 2002 a tour of Door County, Wisconsin, where many Norwegians, Icelanders, and Swedes founded communities in their new country.  [See also our "Trips and Tours" page to learn about future trips.]

In November 1998, the Society's 50th anniversary was celebrated at a gala dinner in Chicago attended by 120 members; among the speakers was Nils William Olsson, one of the founding members of the Society in 1948. He regaled the audience with stories of the big celebration in 1948 with Carl Sandburg and Harry S Truman.  Conferences in 2001 included "Being Swedish American Today," a symposium co-sponsored with the Swenson Center,  held November 2-3 in Rock Island, Illinois.
