Swedish–American Historical Quarterly

One of the most valued benefits of membership in the Swedish–American Historical Society is receiving the Quarterly publication. The Swedish–American Historical Quarterly is a peer-reviewed academic journal published continuously since 1950 by the Swedish–American Historical Society. The title of the journal was the Swedish Pioneer Historical Quarterly from 1950 to 1983.

Full of historic illustrations and substantial articles by researchers, noted authors, and leading academics, the Swedish–American Historical Quarterly documents and interprets the Swedish–American presence in North America. The Quarterly is published four times a year, in January, April, July, and October.

Submissions of Articles and Book Reviews to the Quarterly

The Swedish-American Historical Quarterly invites submissions of article-length manuscripts that advance the understanding of the lives of Swedish immigrants and their descendants in North America, as well as the ongoing history of relations between the United States and Sweden. The journal is peer reviewed for professional scholars and graduate students submitting manuscripts for consideration. The editor will determine if the submission has the potential for publication; if so, it will be sent to specialists in the field for evaluation, comment, and recommendation. A double-blind process, neither the reviewer nor the author is aware of the other’s identity. The work is then accepted for publication, returned with suggestions for revision and resubmission, or rejected. Allow for up to three months for the peer-review process. Peer-reviewed articles will be designated as such when published.

The Swedish-American Historical Quarterly also welcomes submissions from non-professional historians and others to submit manuscripts of interest to readers. This practice is consistent with the nature and scope of the journal since its inception in 1950. At the editor’s discretion, these are not peer reviewed, unless requested by the author. In this manner, works-in-progress by scholars and graduate students are also invited.

Articles – Authors of articles should submit their articles to the Quarterly Editor, Mark Safstrom. Please consult and follow the Quarterly Style Guidelines (PDF) in preparing and writing your articles.

Book Reviews – Readers who know of a book they would like to see reviewed in the Quarterly, or who would themselves like to write a book review for the Quarterly, are also invited to contact the Associate Editor, Adam Hjorthén.
