Join the Swedish American Historical Society and the Swedish Embassy on Friday, September 18 at 12:00 Eastern/11:00 Central in a joint conversation with the artists Mona Namér and Oda Brekke, whose work spans dance, choreography, and visual media.
The artists will speak with Stefan Hansen, cultural attache and board-affiliate for SAHS as well as other members of our publications committee.
About the Artists:
Mona Namér is a Moroccan-Swedish dancer, choreographer, and director based in Stockholm. With roots in hip hop, house, and contemporary dance, her work blends movement and visual art to explore identity, surrealism, and movement as a tool for communication. Mona had built her dance vocabulary and worked across Paris, London, Johannesburg and Marrakech.
Most recently Mona choreographed a fashion performance at 1-54 Art Fair in Marrakech with designer Hanan Sharifa. 2022 Mona showed her dance performance ‘Birth Liquid’ at Modern Dance Theatre and at Fotografiska in Stockholm. She has also directed the short film A Bath In My Mother’s Womb, featuring an original score by Little Dragon. The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2022, won Best Experimental Short at the New Generation Indie Film Awards in Los Angeles, and earned a Vimeo Staff Pick. Her latest film, Hawa, was recently screened at Tate Modern in London.
Oda Brekke is an artist based in Stockholm working with choreography, dance and text. In her practice she often explores hybrid formats moving across performance, installation and print. Her performances have been presented at MDT (Stockholm), BIT (Bergen), Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art and Revolve Performance Art Days (Uppsala) among others and include ‘When there’s only surface left’ (2021), ‘Cut: a choreo-essay’ (2023), ‘dead dead document’ (2024) and in collaboration with Stina Ehn ‘Soft Machines / du står utanför med en penna’ (2026).
Oda is a cofounder of the collective studio space höjden in Stockholm, a collegial platform and common resource for autonomous production and artistic exchange since 2019. She studied Dance Performance at DOCH/Stockholm University of the Arts (2017).
